The two cancelled sequels Justice League 2 and Justice League 3 would have had proper titles, rather than numbers, according to Zack Snyder himself. Discourse around Snyder’s scrapped plans for the DC Extended Universe has reignited in the wake of the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League on HBO Max – a director’s cut which has been far more positively received than the original film. Unfortunately, it’s still unlikely any additional Snyder-directed DC films will be made.
When Snyder was brought on as the creative lead on the DCEU, he had a five-film plan: a story, centered on Superman, which would span Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Justice League, and two additional movies. Due to the first Justice League’s poor reception in 2017, that blueprint was thrown out in favor of a less-centralized model focused on solo films like Shazam! and Wonder Woman 1984. Warner Bros. has made no public efforts since Snyder’s departure from the franchise to resume the production of major crossover films.
As the Snyder Cut continues to garner praise, interest in Snyder’s intended Justice League sequels has risen once again. In a recent interview with MTV News, Snyder revealed he had different titles in mind for the unmade films and that they wouldn’t have been called Justice League 2 and Justice League 3. Snyder explained there were several options considered:
There’s probably like a page of titles that I tried. But yeah, it probably wasn’t going to be ‘Justice League 2 and 3,’ that I can tell you.
Snyder has talked at length about his story ideas for the cancelled films. Justice League 2 would have been set primarily in the Knightmare universe – a post-apocalyptic future where the death of Lois Lane allowed Darkseid to manipulate Superman, causing him to become an evil tyrant and devastate the Earth. That timeline is briefly shown in the Snyder Cut epilogue, where a ragtag team of Batman, Cyborg, Flash, Mera, Deathstroke, and even Jared Leto's Joker are seen fighting back against Superman’s oppressive regime.
Even with the Snyder Cut’s relatively positive critical and popular reception, the odds of him being commissioned to make any more DCEU films are long. Snyder himself has made it clear that those decisions aren’t up to him, and that right now the best thing to do may simply be to appreciate that his finished film has been released at all. Still, there is a chance more could come in the future. The fans managed to make Zack Snyder’s Justice League a reality, and they could possibly help do the same with Justice League 2 and even Justice League 3.
